Thanks to all who replied with advice. My John Carter was married to Elizabeth Hopkins in 1898, then married Lillian Godfrey in abt 1903... just started to look for Elizabeth's death...

There are 4 names on a page, 2 males, 2 females. You have to find out which Elizabeth married John Carter and which married the other male on the page.
To do so find the couples on the 1901 census to get birth year and place then look for the same ladies in 1891 under their maiden names to see which one matches John Carter's wife.

I'm trying to help an older friend of mine get to grips with his tree, and I could really do with some help/advice.
I've got John Carter b abt 1879 (East) Wickham, Kent in the 1901 Census, living in Croyden with his Wife, Elizabeth, and daughter Edith.
I've looked up the Marriage of John & Elizabeth and found 2 different surnames for his wife : Elizabeth Hopkins and Elizabeth Sarah Bowers. Both names found in BMD,cross referenced to John Carter, Dartford, Kent Vol 2a p1047. I'm confused. Why are there 2 different surnames for wife? As I have no details for family further back than this, even if I send for both marriage certificates, how the heck do I know which one is the correct spouse? :S
