So you are saying GR are going to let you have platinum for six months for the same price anyone new would have to pay for standard membership?

I would think there would be a lot of people up in arms if that's the case

Hello everyone who has replied to my earlier message. I have had a confirmation from GR, I told them that I was unclear regarding the renewal cost and they have said it is for a 6 month period and cost in total is £15.00. I have decided to go with it for the next 6 months and then think about Ancestry for a birthday/christmas present.

Thanks for all the comments and advice as always.

Thanks for this thread. It's answered a lot of questions I've been wondering. I've got a Platinum which was on offer at just under £50 for six months and runs out part way through July and as I've got some time away in July I won't be renewing until I get back.

I've been impressed by the level of info people have got off Ancestry when helping others on here. I'm glad I joined here as it's been a good learning experience. I don't want to stop being a part of the community on here and I've built my tree on here too, so I think I've decided to keep a standard on here and join Ancestry.

I pay £9.95 for 12 months

....................... but there is supposed to be a 20% discount for at least part of this year for renewers at all levels.

I will be renewing in June ......... I was given 2 months free some years ago when I had major problems with the site, that extended that year's subscription from renewing in April to June.

MargaretM Report 11 May 2011 18:55

I'm on continuous membership and pay only 7.50 a year. Was just renewed in April and that's what I was charged, good until April 2012.

Andysmum Report 11 May 2011 15:51

My subscription came up for renewal in February at £9.95 for Standard (as before) for 6 months or upgrade to Platinum - Gold had already been withdrawn except for those members who already had it. I had been thinking about upgrading for just 6 months and then reverting to Standard, but then realised that I would lose my current rate and have to pay the new, much higher rate . I think that there are some members who are still paying the original rate of £9.95 for a year. I have decided to spend the extra on a subscription to something else - probably Find My Past, as most people on here seem to recommend it.

I was reading £10 or £15 to upgrade, meaning that amount over and above what they had been paying

and I don't think it's that much of a good deal

..... if you were paying £30 for 6 months last year for Gold, that equals £50 or £60 annual (depending on whether or not you got a deduction for paying for 12 months in one go).

Platinum is £80 .... so GR are offering the upgrade for approximately half of what it would cost to upgrade from Gold to Platinum

but as they no longer offer Gold, then you don't have any choice, do you?!!

jax Report 11 May 2011 04:44

True sylvia but not for £15 surely

Meaning I am reading it they have been offered platunum for £15 to upgrade??

When I had gold that was £30 + for 6 months last year

YES

If you click on Subscribe (next to your name) right at the top of the screen ....... they now offer only Platinum and Standard.

Annual Membership Platinum £80

so are you getting a bum deal??????????????

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 May 2011 04:40

I would go for standard GR, and then either ancestry (my preference) or findmypast

The other sites have far superior records to GR .......... and better coverage of the records that are found on GR

I have Premium ancestry, and find it fills all my needs .... occasionally I need to know something in the US or Australia, and then I have to ask for help.

I honestly do not think the Gold or Platinum memberships on here are worth it

BTW ................... I think I did see somewhere a few weeks ago that GR is doing away with the Gold Membership, and just having Standard and Platinum

So that might be why they are offering you the sepcial deal :)))

Is it not £10 or £15 on top of what you paid before for gold membership?

Standard is about £15 now so I cannot see them offering the whole package for the same amount or less

Yes thanks Jonesey, that is just the answer I am searching for, it is not very clear I am afraid! Pehaps I should contact them first. Thank you.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 May 2011 22:45

I suppose that it depends upon what/how long the £15 covers. I, like Brummiejan, would normally advise that Platinum membership at its normal cost of £80 per year is not really worth it. If however the £15 is all you are being asked to pay for a year or even 6 months then I would certainly accept that offer.

Just make sure you cancel in plenty of time though!

Thanks Jan

I have to make up my mind I think pretty soon as I don't know how long the offer is on for with GR but yes I think I will try the 2 weeks trial anyway, thank you.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 10 May 2011 22:34

Well, it's a personal view really, but personally I have basic Genes and basic Ancestry as it serves my needs best. Why not try the free 2-week trial - I believe FMP also offers this.

Hello, my GR Membership is up for renewal, I am a gold member but I have today received an offer to upgrade to platinum for £15.00. Ages ago I remember a thread advising people to have only the basic membership on here and membership with Ancestry instead. Can anyone advise please before I go ahead with my membersip.

Thanks in advance
