I would'nt want it anyway unless it was free as I could'nt get on with when I had it before so subscribed to ancestry and FMP aswell and just used the boards here and left their records well alone.

I just think the percentage of discount is over the top thats all I do not want to get into an arguement ... so thats my lot on this matter

This thread seems to be veering off the original topic a bit.

At the end of the day, GR reserve the right to charge whatever price they wish to whoever they wish. By all means try to haggle, but If you don't like it then don't pay.

It is all down to supply and demand, the first lesson in economics.

Simples.

well maybe jax its because i have always been a gold member since dec 2008 and have paid far more than the std rate of £9.95.i have been paying £70.00 per year for 2 1/2 years which is quite a bit more than std members.

anyway i dont make the rules and in this day and age will take whatever im offered in discount to keep me here.

if you had been offered £10 to upgrade and you only pay 9.95 and i pay 34.95, then i would have the bigger gripe i think.

please lets not get into an argument about whats fair.afterall i dont make the rules, thats down to gr. maybe contact them and ask them why you didnt get this offer.

So do you think it is fair Florence that you should have platinum membership for £10 when others who have been paying members for years are not offered it.

I am not speaking just about myself but I did take out gold membership in Jan 2010 and to be honest it was a complete waste of money and at that time they did not offer platinum (then I am not too sure about when platinum was intoduced). but they did not offer me anything to stay gold or upgrade platinum when my six months were up.

So when this six months subs are up in july I expect I will have to pay £9.95 for standard as I had my 20% discount last renewal

well oldbean, like you i will update for the bargain of £10.00. i have to say i have been a gold member since i joined, so maybe its because of that i have been given a good deal. when i renewed in feb i too got a discount of 20% and if i remember my 6 mnths was reduced to £29.95 which i thought was great.

I have renewed to-day and was charged £9.50 no mention of any discount.

jax Report 13 May 2011 12:48

Yeah 20% is normal I got that off my 6 month standard of £9.95 down to £7.96
FMP gives 20% after 6 months...
Ancestry as I said will sometimes give a discount but I doubt that it is anymore than 25%

But a discount of 70% sounds a bit much

Gai Report 13 May 2011 10:54

GR must be offering discounts because originally I have paid $19.95 for 6 months standard membership.

When mine came up for renewal in April I was charged $15.96 for the 6 months. I did query with GR before hand as I couldn't believe that my membership was cheaper that before.

Quinsgran

just after the sale to brightsolid became legal about November-ish last year, brightsolid said that there would be a 20% discount, and when queried, said it would last through the year cycle of renewers

Like you, I started at £7.50, went up to £9.50 ....... and am hoping to get the 20% discount when I renew in June.

What is strange is I joined just after SylviainCanada and Margee.
Originally I was charged £7.50 per year and Im on continuous membership.

It went up to £9 50 per year and has stayed that way.

However I see LindaB who joined a year later was charged £7 50 this year. It must be the 20% discount mentioned by Sylvia.
Im due for renewal next month so hope the offer is still on

jax

jax Report 12 May 2011 16:19

It does seem a little unfair for people who have been paying members for years not to be offered this.

I have only been a paying member for almost 18 months and started as a gold member but was not offered anything when I changed to single membership.

As I already had ancestry and FMP at the time I would'nt have wanted it anyway...but thats not the point.

Same goes for ancestry give them a call you may or may not get a discount...but why some and not others?

Hello again everyone, I have had my Platinum Membership confirmed from my account for £15.00. I am delighted but it now means that I have to get on with furthering my tree.

Maybe because I decided to change my details to a single membership instead of Gold as before that they thought they would try an offer. It worked in my favour!

Thanks for a lively discussion.

I have had a continious standard subscription since I joined.

I was charged £7.60 for a further 12 months when my subsription was renewed last month.

I also received a similar email Margee quoting £7.50 however I wasn't going to quibble over the extra 10p as I was expecting to pay £9.95.

One wonders about GR's pricing policy and wonders if they even know what they're charging to different people.

As mentioned earlier my suscription came up for renewal last month. This is from the email that I received from GR advising me:

"We'll renew your membership for £6.00 on 21st April 2011 using the card you used last time. If we are unable to do this, for example because your card has changed, we'll let you know."

Then when my Visa card had been charged this is what they sent:

"Your membership to Genes Reunited has been renewed for you as requested.

This means you can send unlimited messages to other members, view their trees and add to message boards until 21/04/2012.

Thanks for paying, here's your receipt: You have been billed £7.50 GBP for a full membership - you requested continuous membership on 21/04/2010. "

I haven't received my Visa bill yet so not sure what i was charged.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 May 2011 01:32

The cost of the Standard subscription is actually unclear on here

.... it does give a price per month of £0.83 for a 12 month subscription, which equals £9.96. Thus it does imply that there is a special 1 year sub, which I thought had been done away with

It is £9.95 for the 12 month for the "oldies".

A 6 month subscription costs £2.50 per month, or £15 lump sum.

Platinum costs £80 for 12 months

I have no idea what the membership was for Gold ................. but I'm not sure that you are getting such a good deal

and if you ARE getting Platinum for £10 or £15, then the rest of us should be up in arms.

are you certain that the offer is not £15 per month?

jax

jax Report 12 May 2011 01:28

Someone just said they were paying £95 for the year so he would be cancelling when renewal comes up ??

Yeah £15 for 6 months sounds good to me would save the £76 I have just paid for FMP

jax

SylviaInCanada

it seems strange to me also that GR would be offering Platinum for such a cheap deal!

as I said earlier, £6.67 per month equals £80

We should all be jumping at that deal!
