House Daughter 1861 census

I have just been looking at an 1861 Scottish census, and note that in the household there is a 7 day old girl.

Her relationship to the head of the house is shown as House Daughter.

I've never seen this term before and his other children are shown simply as son or daughter.

Has anyone else seen this, does it mean anything other than a daughter?

Are you viewing the actual image?

Could it be 'Nurse'...rather than 'House'?

Nurse child was a very common term in those days.............

Does she have the same surname? maybe she is a child of a family member who is being looked after by them.Are you looking at the actual page on Scotlands People??

Hi all,

Flick it is the youngest daughter of the family, and am only trying to guess at the interpretation used by Ancestry.

Shirley, I don't think that fits the case. The other children are a year and two years older than her and every census after that shows her as a daughter.

I just thought House daughter must mean something? Unless it is Ancestry just using their skills at guessing!

sounds like an Ancestry guesswork. I think you can view the actual census pages on Scotlands People .I had a look this morning but no credits to follow up.

If it's Ancestry, I would guess some mistranscription, like maybe it's the housekeepers daughter.

Grace - FreeCEN has some1861 transcriptions.
BAN, BUT, ELN, PEE, SEL are complete, MOR, NAI, ROX are partial.
