Marriage help please

Marriage how do i differentiate between 2 people same first name but different second name.

I have found the marriage of a John Brown b1818 m1840 in Nottingham Nottinghamshire, just before the birth of his first child Caroline Brown b1841.

The problem i have is that i know he married a lady called Jane. i have followed this familty from 1841 till their death, but when i found their marriage there are 2 Janes, with differing surnames....is there any way i can find out which Jane he married without buying the marriage certificate. The names i have are Jane Oldfield and a Jane Langley. Appreciate any help at all

You could try looking for them in different census years and see if there is ever any of Jane's family living with them. However the easiest way is to buy the certificate or the birth certificate of one of their children.

To be definitely sure you need the marriage certificate or one of the children's birth certificates.
If you have found the births of Jane Oldfield and Jane Langley in igi, and are sure you have correctly identified them, and they are of vastly different ages, you could guess at one or the other.
You could try and follow the other 'husband' to see what cross-checks from censuses also - perhaps living with in-laws at some stage?

One way or the other it means buying a certificate. Personally I would opt for the marriage cert cos then you should get the additional info of their dads names & occupations.

Unfortunately in 1840 there are 4 couples per page, making it a little harder. You have to follow the other 3 husbands!

Thank you i think i will look for the births of these women first i never thought to do that .
It's not that i am mean and don't want to part with my money but seriously in the last year researching my family i have bought 7 Birth certificates and 4 marriage certificates and one of these i bought to find they were no relation....... and had to delete 8 relations then in my tree.... the Brown name is so common/popular hahaha.

Thank you to Shirley and Mad Bull too i'm taking your advice too i think i have no choice but to buy the certificates, but i will research the three hubby's first that's a good idea too.
