Imprisonment for what?

Hello, could somebody help me please.

My relative James Morphew is shown in the Ancestry Criminal Registers as being imprisoned for 6 months in 1821. It appears to say it was for the crime of 'Uttering baseborn'. What do you think? If so, what does it mean?

Also, out of interest, do the entries below James' one say 'Procuring ditto for Utterist'' Thanks, Sue

not really - people were transported to Australia for such things as stealing a handkerchief!!!

relative of mine was transported for seven years for writing a nasty letter to his employer!!

Uttering was akin to forgery - the act of knowingly passing on the forged document, but not sure where the baseborn bit fits in this context!

Well that seems to fit in a bit more with the 'procuring' entry for the others. Perhaps it doesn't say baseborn, although it really looks like it to me now.

I think what it says is "Uttering Base Coin" - probably means he tried to pay for something with a counterfeit coin.

The people underneath James were convicted of "Procuring base coin to utter it".

I put the Ancestry mangnifyer on and I would agree with Kathleen
'uttering a base coin'.Base coin is a counterfeit.

Below procuring ditto (possibly those listed above) to utter it

Baseborn was another word for illegitimate.
