Hi, I am trying to find information about Lawn House, Grosvenor Place, Margate, Kent. According to the 1881 Census it was a Religious Community and Convalescent Home. I know that it was run by the Roman Catholic Church but would like to know the following.

1. Is it still open or when did it close.
2. What type of 'convalescents' did they take in.
3. Are records of 'inmates' available and who would have them

I would be grateful for any information

St. Catherine’s Hospital High Street, Ramsgate.

In 1901, a Miss Ellis purchased No’s.142, 144 and 146 High Street and donated them to The Daughter’s of the Cross, Diocese of Southwark. Sister Mary Emmanuel commanded the convent until 1916 when Sister Stanislads took over. The hospital for the treatment of consumption T.B. was advertised as a hospital for women but in its early days it also treated male patients. The main treatment was ‘fresh air’ and many of the patients were made to sleep on the verandah’s and took cold water treatments. In 1908 patients were charged 10 shillings and sixpence per week for the pleasure!

St. Catherine’s Hospital was relocated to Haslemere, Surrey in March 1918.

Daughter’s of the Cross had hospitals up and down the country along with the Haslemere consumptive hospital was a Sanatorium, a large hospital at Cheam and the head house was at Carshalton. The Sisters ran a joint convalescent home for boys and girls at Lawn House, Margate but their work had gown to such an extent during the previous few years that it was found impossible to carry out their work with the limited accommodation.

Grosvenor Place still exists. If you Google map it you can wander down the road. I found an Arlington House (one of the bigger houses on the left hand side) but some of the house names have long gone. There also seem to be a few newish houses on the right hand side. I don't think the house is there anymore.

Hi Mrs Grumpy, Thank you for your reply. I did 'google' and found that the street still existed but it would appear that the house, if still there, has changed name or in fact demolished.
Would love to go see the street, and others but not living in the UK is impossible.

There was a big fire in Grovesnor Place in 2009, which may have destroyed the buliding.

I have also been researching Lawn House - although I'm interested in what happened to 2 inmates who were there from 1906 to 1917. It was a convalescent home for children (usually from London) who were affected by the bad air of the city. The 2 people I'm looking for were sent there by the Board of Guardians (who I guess were like social workers these days) from Fulham. It was a Roman Catholic institution supposedly run by nuns. It seems as though most of the inmates were eventually sent back to where they came from - I think that the Board of Guardians who sent them were responsible for funding the childrens stay and therefore would not really want them to stay too long. Have you found your 1881 resident on the subsequent census returns?

My problem is that the 2 inmates I'm researching stayed for over 10 years and were orphans by the time they were sent there. I'd be interested to know when the house was shut down and what happened to the people who lived there afterwards.

Once they had reached the age to work ,and of the age when they no longer could be an inmate , if there were no relatives they could return to they may have been secured live in domestic work
