Thank you Simon this detective story is starting to get frustrating I can accept that they were missed in the 1861 census. And it would be so easy to use the Maria Weekley from Huntingdonshire when in fact she states she was born in Bedfordshire she also disappears after 1851. There probably isn't a marriage cert for John and Maria as I don't believe they were married so it doesn't leave me anywhereelse to get that bit of all important bit of proof. Stumped Chris

...on the subject of county boundaries, my postal address is Newbury, Berkshire - but I don't live in Newbury and I live in Hampshire and not Berkshire.

It is because our post used to be sorted at the Newbury post office and the postman then travelled south until he got to the junction 200 yards down the road from my house. Beyond there, the postal address was Whitchurch, Hampshire, as their post was sorted at Whitchurch and their postman travelled north until he got to the same junction!

But then, of course, there was massive boundary changes to counties in the 1970s (1973, if I recall), which complicates old records.

I quite often use Google maps to search for places, especially that of 'husband' and 'wife' to see how far (or otherwise) people might have travelled. It makes you wonder how some of them met too. I have a (proven) grocer's daughter from East London who married a bailiff's daughter from Cumbria in the 1860s. Now how on earth did they meet???

Christine, sadly not everyone is recorded by a Census. I worked on the 1991 Census here and it was a complete nightmare trying to get a full return from everybody. We were told that if each 'enumerator' (the bods who have to go around collecting the completed forms) missed out just two forms, it would equate to the total population of Sheffield being missed out.

I too have become unstuck in the past, being unable to trace odd people who appear in one or more census, then disappear for another one. Sometimes it is just a question of mistranscription of the records and so you can track them down. Sometimes though it does seem as though they just got missed out for whatever reason.

Hi all, does anyone have any idea why there is not a 1861 census( or one that I can find) for the family. Even though he was a travelling musician surely one must exist I would assume in Liverpool at that time. Thanks for any ideas.. Chris

her death registration says she is 50 ..... but that might be a bit of a round number

you could always get that certificate and see what it might say

Hi all I think you are right in suggesting they didn't marry as British ancestors couldn't find a marriage cert for them. I did find death reg for Maria Peets 1880 and she isn't in the 1881 census... Any suggestions???

Thinking about the place of birth for Maria - it can vary from census to census. A relative of mine was born in Scotland in one, and Ireland in another :-)

Part of the Ancoats area of Manchester that you mention was known as "Little Italy".

If you Google it you will find books etc re the area and its history

Well they're about 40km apart. Great Stukeley has been in Huntingdonshire, then Cambridgeshire.

I'd be careful before claiming the Great Stukeley Maria.

Hi Thanks for your response she did say Bedford Bedfordshire. As I'm in Qld Aust I don't know anything at all about county borders. It.s so tempting to just go ahead and use it but have learnt my lesson on that front.

I am not really familiar with shifting county borders although I know they did here and there .......... maybe someone else will be

they are certainly in fairly close proximity though especially as we don't know where in Bedfordshire she indicated she was born ?

Hi, yes I have seen those and wasn't sure about the place of birth as in the 1971 census she said it was Bedfordshire . Would you consider these records as a possibility since it's not far from Huntingdonshire?

I must be missing something have seen the 1871 census and it does seem to be the right family ,but I cannot find them in 1861 census. I am pretty convinced that Giovanni Pizzo is My John Peets just trying to find that bit of documentation that proves it. Also Maria Weekly is proving to be just as elusive.

Hi Mary there is a document in amongst the ones I have that does have the name Francisco Pizzo on it as I have also seen the one you are talking about there is nothing to tie it to Giovanni. It does seem like a big coincidence that Giovanni named one of his sons Francis Patrick. I had an Italian friend try to translate the documents and failed so am in the process of finding a professional ..Thank you for your help Chris

Hi Joy, I can make out on one page of the passport., the word Liverpool 20 March 1854 as it's signed by the commissoner of police Bologne I would think that's the date he left there and that is the latest date. As these are only photocopies from the GRMCO they hold the originals, I would assume they either didn't copy thelast pages or they were missing. Thanks for your help
