hi all.
ive been trying in vain to find my own christening. i was born in walthamstow e17, but cant find any records apart from my birth there,
their is a possibility i was christened in germany, when my dad was stationed over there, in the raf,
does anyone have any idea how i could check this out.

are you looking on ancestry? I think baptisms on there only go up to 1906

I would'nt think you would find your christening on line anyway. All my family including myself come from Walthamstow and I am pretty sure my gran would have been baptised as her other 14 siblings were but she was the only one born there the others Islington, still waiting for it to come on line and that was in 1904. Walthamstow came under Essex then rather than London

What an interesting query. I know where and when I was christened but have no idea how to find any record. i am certain it wouldn't be online though. My thought would be to go to the archive centre and have a look there. Very tricky if you don't know the church.

iwas born 1954, in 58 my dad was posted to munchen gladbach in germany, my mum me and brothers all went for 2 years in married quarters. i have a feeling i was christened out there.just dont know how to find out

i think ive tried them, but not knowing what country its very difficult. im wondering if the raf camp might still be there, and if so would the camp church hold records.

yes i was christened . i remember as a kid going to my god-parents house with mum and dad for afternoon tea.

Do you know what regiment your father served with? maybe they could help?

all i know jan, is he worked in intelligence. and the raf wont give me much detail on him.

Obviously not the same for everyone but I would think that in 1954 you would have been more likely to have been christened within a couple of months of your birth so probably in this country.

If you have your birth certificate and know what address your parents lived at when you were born I would try the nearest church to the address.

but the records for the church are not online, so I cannot find it


Don't forget, baptism records are in the parish registers, and it seems that it is up to the church to get them transcribed. Not many have those resources.


At the time that I was baptized, it was still very common for women to have their babies baptized within 6 weeks of birth, preferably within 2-4 weeks.


I know that my baptism was delayed because the weather was so bad that Mum and Dad etc could not get to the church during January ....... and we lived in a town!


Women at that time were still considered "unlcean" after giving birth until they had been "churched" and this was often combined with the baptism. I do not know if that was the case for me.

still leaning towards germany. dad was in singapore when i was born and didnt return long, before being posted to germany.

If it were in London, my guess is that the rego is now full and deposited in the LMA, even if it's not online. Check out:

Alternatively, you could try researching the RAF chaplain service to see where those records would be.
