Im asking out of curiousosity, is it possible to trace ancesters with last names smith or jones,

is it possible t trace the ancestors without costing a fortune on certificates,

my grandma was a jones from wales and think ive given up before even getting started lol

Well, strangely enough common names can be as easy as unusual ones, at least there is less chance of them being mis-transcribed. However, unless you are very lucky certs are necessary from time-to-time to back up your research, no way round it really. As long as you start with what you know you are in with a chance. Have to say the welsh are very tricky though as they have about 3 surnames and tend to lack imagination with first name too! (I speak as someone with Williamses...)
Now the 1911 is available it does help quite a bit. Why not have a go? All of us on here will help out, we love a challenge!

i have me grans death cert but it gives me the wronge details as to where she was born.

it says she was born in south wales but vagulay i remember her saying she was born and grew up in north wales

You will need your grandmother's marriage cert at the very least I would say. It helps to think of this as a nice thing to have in its own right. When a bit short of cash I have been known to have certs as a birthday present (yes, very sad, I know).

i have grand mas marriage cert and by time she married she was living in england and only gives her dads name and he was a farmer in wales

Ha thats nothing cos my nan was smith and she married to another smith. They are not related to each other! All you need to know the grand parent names and their brothers and sisters, then work from this.
