Freemasons in India 1880s

I have someone on my tree who went out to India in about 1880's to help build the Nagpur railway. He was a Freemason whilst there. Does anyone have any idea why an ordinary worker would have become involved with the Freemasons at this point in time and in India? I'd be grateful for any ideas.

Lots of "ordinary" workers were, and still are, Freemasons.

Hi Katie,
I just didn't realise that the Freemasons were in India - not that I know much about them anyway. I wonder what benefits there could have been to belonging to the group?

They are worldwide and would certainly have had lodges throughout the Empire. Benefits? - perhaps it was just like an expat club.
