Sorry Marilyn - I may be missing something here

"I have a Lidia Atherton who`s parents were John Atherton and Mary, daughter of Peter and Alice Atherton. I have searched for a marriage of Peter and Mary in the late 1700`s in Wigan, and cannot find them"

Lidia Atherton d of John & Mary Atherton?
John Atherton married Mary Atherton?
Mary Atherton was the daughter of Peter & Alice Atherton?

did you mean you were looking for a marriage of Peter & Mary or John & Mary or Peter & Alice?

when was Lidia born please?

Thanks for your help Kath, I am maybe swaying towards this as I can find quite a few other marriages for the sibling baptised as Mary.

Molly can be a pet name for Mary and it is possible that she gave the name she was known by on her marriage certificate. Whoever recorded the information would just write down whatever they were told.

I have a Lidia Atherton who`s parents were John Atherton and Mary, daughter of Peter and Alice Atherton. I have searched for a marriage of Peter and Mary in the late 1700`s in Wigan, and cannot find them. I found an almost definite baptism of Mary and siblings, one of which was Molly.

I did find a marriage of a Molly Atherton and a John Atherton which would tie in the the dates of children born to Molly/Mary and John and just wondered if anyone thought that Molly was short for Mary. I have just read on google that Mary is an Irish name and Molly is a pet name for Mary but would appreciate any suggestions before I go down the wrong track.

But would they put Molly on the marriage certificate instead of Mary, (Mary is named as mother on the baptisms of all children)

Hope you understand, any help appreciated, thanks

Marilyn
