Husband and wife trees?

I have lots of info on 2 distinct families ie my own and husbands, is it advisable or possible to have 2 separate trees or do I have to combine them?Bernice

Hi Bernice,

I am not sure why you would want to keep them separate, I store mine and my wives on one tree as it is best for our daughter if she shows an interest.
As fas as I can work out you can only have one tree on this site.

The only way to have another tree on here is to set up another account.

You can have a free account just to compile a tree.

Why not invest in a commercial program such as Family Tree Maker (FTM) and use this to maintain all your records in a single place.

Its reporting facilities will allow you to select as much or as little information as you wish to share with others so there is no need to have separate trees. So for example you can provide your husbands sisters children with a a report of their ancestry without cluttering it up with your family details.

Then, periodically, you update a file to whatever sites you subscribe to GR, Tribal, Ancestry etc with as much or as little info you want to share on those sites.

I disagree. If might be difficult to navigate the GR tree, but not when you use a progam such as FTM. I have over 13,000 names in all and navigation is never a problem, nor is keeping track of who is who - its all there in the database.

Believe me, multiple trees is not a good idea - I tried it years ago but never again.

i got on touch with some one on here who,s grandad was my grandads brother which was really great then when i done some more match ups with another person who had all my relations on her tree i thought i had found another branch of my tree, it turned out that she was the wife of the man who.s grandad is my grandads brother so followed that one up 4 nothing. Sorry i know its not a tip well i soppose it could be but now if some one opens their tree for me i check to see if their wife or husband is already in my contacts

It depends on what suits you best Bernice.

My OH and I (me doing the research lol) have a joint tree as we have children and grandchildren I don't see the point of having separate trees...our families are joined by our marriage.

We have a very basic joint tree on Genes only to find possible distant cousins who would like to get in contact. Another very detailed private (by password only) tree on TribalPages for those of our families who have internet connection, have an interest in their family history however are not members of Genes and another offline not FTM but Roots Magic.
