unable to trace birth certificate

i have been trying to find my grandfathers birth certificate...on a recent holiday to scotland i went to the registrars office and was able to find his marriage certificate but the staff searched the records in scotland and could find no trace of his birth...he was born in kirkcudbright in 1878 and his name was cornelius airley ...does anybody have any idea why i cant trace his birth certificate xx |
