Thank you Kathryn. I'm at a brick wall and don't want to go off in the wrong direction but don't even want to order birth certificate until I'm sure I've got the right one!

I do have his mother and father's names from his death record (he died in Scotland), but cannot find any corresponding birth certificate or his parents marriage. Very frustrating!!

The census should give a place of birth,if so that is where the birth will be registered.

Yes you are correct, the only way is to shell out the money I'm afraid. If you are lucky you may be able to narrow down the numbers if there are corresponding entries on the IGI though.

Hi, I am searching for the birth record for my great grandfather PETER McKIE or MCKEE, b. abt 1872 - 1875. My family is in Scotland however I can not find any matches in Scotland but there are a few England births listed that may be it.

Am I correct in saying though that for England births, the only way to confirm the mother and father's names is by ordering and paying for the birth certificate. The only records I can find at the moment are the indexes which don't really confirm anything. How else can you get a record of a birth with mother and fathers name?

I have a subscription to ancestry.co.uk as well if that would help.

Any help appreciated.
Thank You
