Sounds as if they cant help prove the connection so have declined to reply.
You could try another PM to see if any response .

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 8 Dec 2010 18:23

wellybobs - depends how long ago you asked for the 'hints'. If it were say, less than 2 weeks, then they could have had other 'real life' things on their mind, and want to be able to devote time to give a reasoned response.

On the other hand, they may feel embarrassed as they haven't researched it themselves, have fallen ill...or worse.

Depending on how strongly you feel, you could send another message asking if they have been able to confirm their sources (Make it light hearted - you sometimes get in a bit of a muddle with your paper work etc ) , then give it up if no response.

2 of my respected contacts used to be very happy to exchange info. I've recently emailed new docs , but had no reply from either, which is unusual. As both are rather elderly, i'm beginning to think they are no longer in a position to reply. :((

good luck

Hi RamblingRose,

I've come across this before. And discovered that they had something like 30,000+ names in their tree. Yes I've written it correctly! Mind blowing isn't it?
It's no wonder their answer was "they are in my tree take a look". I couldn't find them and repeatedly asked them how we were connect, and got the same response everytime. I got lost looking around their tree trying to find the connection so asked them the most obvious one really - How many names were in their tree! It's no wonder these people can't tell how they are connected when all they do is collect names.

It's not really geneology is it?

Don't take it to heart they are just been silly and not worth the trouble. Like all the other's I never open my tree for anyone, untill I can establish that we are definatley connected, but then point out that the tree on this site isn't the accurate one anyway as I stopped adding to it because of this type of thing, now I keep mine elsewhere.

You've been a great help to me in the past - and I hope you will continue to help others, so take no notice of this person they are just not worth it. Like IGP suggested report them to GR. We don't have to keep out tree's on here if we don't want to. It's a great site and such a shame some people don't use it for it's true purpose.

Regards, Lou

Thanks Looby Lou :)) I had a quick search for him on boards and found a search post in Surname info 2005
( they weren't my rellies either lol) so it's not like he's new to the site or the vagaries of hot matches lol.

Further... my last message to him

"For your reference, I have checked every surname in my tree against those in your tree there is no Surname that GR could have matched that appears in both. So no worries eh...you and I are in no way connected ."

three replies ..

I have sent to admin Moonbi, and deleted my tree as it's not worth the hassle of anyone else getting a hot match lol... there is only 'my name' left and that has been altered to something which won't ever match anyone lol.

Rambling

Rambling Report 9 Dec 2010 11:07

and his last sweet message before GR blocked him

"Be sure you tell them you dont act by their rules, I never abuse normal people. you are abnormal."

Dont know what to say about that. so I wont say anyhing at all.

lol moonbi , I've never claimed to be "normal" ;)

Rambling Report 9 Dec 2010 11:53

What is interesting to me lol is that I think I know who he thinks the connection is... given the area of Aus' that he is from and the area in Aus' someone of the same name as a relative was from... but it wasn't on his tree when I looked, so I think it was not a hot match...but a 'fishing' trip lol

No wonder he has so many names if that's how he's doing it, matching someone born in London as the same person born in Aus in the same year lol.

moonbi Report 9 Dec 2010 12:11

Oh dear
he is giving us Aussies a bad name.
who does genealogy that way? !!
Did he open his tree to you?

Rambling

Rambling Report 9 Dec 2010 12:34

He did open his tree when I requested moonbi, i thought I might be able to spot the 'someone' he wouldn't name to connect...but there isn't anyone though he does have a lot of names there!

Florence Report 9 Dec 2010 19:41

Hello RamblingRose,

I have one on anc, saw that he had put my gg grandparents pictures
on his tree so i went to his tree and checked it out.
Found that from a peticular person in my tree ( who as same name in his tree) HE HAS MARRIED TO A PERSON IN HIS TREE so hence as followed through to my gg grandparents.
I checked marriage out found that my ancester could not have married who he has for her partner because she was still at home and single at the time of marriage? so i e,mailed him and told him that his ancester is not the same person as mine , she may have same name and married the person he has on his tree , but its not mine so he should not have put pictures in his tree !! he has wrong family.

but he has not got in touch and he still has them in his tree?
the best part is he has the 2 census that show the ancester cannot be the same ? but he still chose to follow on with the wrong family?
never mind his problem not mine !

And as for hot matches on here why bother none of them match anyway?
leave them to contact me and i always ask what thier connection is?

Rambling Report 9 Dec 2010 19:52

There are lots like that on Ancestry Florence, quite often I have seen the information linked to a census and then when you look at the image it is so obviously not the person just the same surname... and then that is copied by others without checking and on it goes.....

Florence

Florence Report 9 Dec 2010 20:08

The tree is so mixed up at first i thought that he was one of those who used his tree to store info he has 2 of most census. and you get the impression when he is sure of the right one he would cancel the others out ? but when i saw the pictures i was amazed how can you follow on with pictures if you are not sure of the person you have to follow from.?

Carol 430181 Report 10 Dec 2010 18:42

Rambling Rose, I have also have a lot of people on Ancestry who have completly wrong Trees, but find no one takes any notice if I e-mail them so have given up. I now just add comments and hope it will stop other people copying , but it is a bit like the Forth Bridge.

FamilyFogey Report 10 Dec 2010 19:17

I've taken to doing that lately Carol. I was researching one family by the name of Vessey and loads of people had all copied the same errors over and over again, no tree online actually has the correct information! It amazes me how people blindly copy and dont ever check anything. They had people being children of themselves, children born the same year that the parents were, people dying before their children were born etc.

I dont understand how people can copy without thinking 'mmm this doesn't seem right to me!'
