Thank you all for your help, makes things a lot harder to find out when there are no definitive records . I have had a look on the NA J77 but he does not show up. |

There are a number of Thomas Knowles in the divorce records on the National Archives site -you can search the catalogue under J77 plus name-On e of my relatives was divorced in 1866 and he was in no way wealthy as I believe it became easier around that date-so it is a possibility |

Unfortunately I dont have the Marriage cert yet, I have just been told a few things about it by my Uncle. Thomas's father is listed as William on the cert. So its Thomas Knowles I am looking for. |

Divorce was very uncommon then and very expensive as well as carrying a huge social stigma. She would probably still put married (especially if she had children living with her). |

Unless they were very well-off, divorce is very unlikely. Much more common to just set up home with someone else or even marry bigamously. |
