I'm finally going to sign up for one of the online records collections and have thought about Ancestry or the Genealogist.

Does anyone have any recommendations for either of these please, which holds more records, easier to use etc?

I personally use Ancestry and have done for quite a number of years
Why not take out the free 2 week trial and have a look

Don't forget about Findmypast (FMP). I have never used it myself, but some members on here do, and it too has a free trial.

Hi Paul,

Before you sign up for your 2 week trial, make yourself a list of names and dates of birth that you have and those that you are looking for. You will be surprised what you find out in that time. I took a weeks holiday and managed to get back to 1841 census for 7 legs of my family. Then with the use of Freebmd and igi and of course the help on here, I found that I have not get needed to sign up to any.
Once I had sorted out all the stuff I got during the trial I then had a 2 week trial on findmypast to tie up loose ends.
One little tip when you find anything you want to keep during your trial , print it off. I saved some bits and after the trial when I went to view them it asked me to subscribe.
As with most things, you will get better at it as you go on. I found the list thing very useful though.

thanks for the suggestions. I guess the obvious thing would be to try searching on them first to see which comes back with results..... Just wondered though which members used and if they'd had any particularly good results and could recommend.

I did my initial research with free trial using ancestry but I then found FMP easier. Don't forget that sometimes less details you enter in the search produces better results and also tick for varients in spelling it it allows. This is why the free trials are good. When you are new to it you don't know all the little tricks.

You haven't actually stated what it is you are interested in searching for and for what dates. It is a bit like horses for courses, no one site is the 'best'

For example are you just interested in Census and BMD records? England and Wales? London Metropolitan area? Scotland? Other parts of the world?

Paul, another free site is 'FamilySearch.org' they also have international details. its easy to use.
