I have found my Great Uncle's WW1 Medal \Roll Index Card, but I don't know how to decipher it to tell what medals he would have been entitled to. He was only 23 and died on 13.11.1914 at Ypres. He is listed on the Menin Gate and has no known grave. I assume therefore that he was blown to bits. Not a nice thought, but a fact I accept.


I would love to work out what medals he was entitled to and try to get copies.. Does anyone know how to decipher the writing on these cards? It seems to be some kind of shorthand.

Gives us his name and any other identifying info and someone will look at it for you.

British War,,which every enlister got.

and the 1914 Star medal ,given to anyone who served overseas,

so possibly only the two.

try ebay for medals as they are always changing hands and coming to light.

Thank you for the replies.

His name was Frederick Waters b.1891 Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He was a private in the 19th Royal Hussars. His regimental no, was 9464. He enlisted on 17.09.1914 and died at Ypres, Belgium on 13.11.1914 less than two months later.

I found his card details on Ancestry. The card has:

Victory XX (with dots in) CY/125B Page 2415
British do do
Star 14 CY/2 Page 60


Below that it mentions Clasp/2/3380

I remember reading something somewhere that an X with dots in meant something but I can't remember what.

Any help would be much appreciated.

he got all 3 medal associated with ww1

if he was awared a clasp then it could have been for good conduct,?as he was KIA during the first throws of the war,there isnt a service record for him,the medals would have gone to n,o,kin.

The references you've given from the card refer to the Medal Rolls which are at the National Archives. The only extra information they usually give is a mans battalion.

Have you searched for a service record for him on Ancestry? Lots were destroyed so his records might not be there but worth a look.

Thank you for that. No I've not searched for a service record for him on Ancestry. I'll try that next. What do the crosses with dots in them mean? also the bit where it says: Clasp /2/3380 ?

The dots just indicate what was inscribed on his medal
