I'm having a "silly moment", if I subscribe to Genes Platinum Subscription in order to view the 1911 census, do I still have to pay to view the individual records, or can I see everything for free?

I think you can see everything, if in doubt contact genes. However, from what I have read on here Genes can be tricky to search, so do check out the 1911 site first and compare cost.

You can do the initial searches for free, this can be handy in locating relatives before paying to see transcript or image. The free search is also much better to use.

Depending on the number of searches you wish to carry out, it may prove more economical to buy units on the 1911 site.

Alternatively, many GR members have subs to FMP 1911, and are more than happy to do lookups

Ancestry will soon have the 1911. It might be worth comparing the cost of Platinum on here with their subscription.

For platinum subscription you can view as many 1911 as you wish. What I found a slight disappointment was they are not the actual record but a transcribed detail. I have found them good value for money simply because I didn't think I would research as many people as I have. I had difficulty finding one of my relatives because they had been transcribed with one extra letter attached to their name. I had to ask for help on these boards to locate. I had their address and someone on here kindly found it with that information so their site had a better search facility that this one, but when I later asked them which site it was unfortunately I didn't get a reply. -Jle

The 'official' 1911 site has a very good, flexible, search facility.

Searching on the site is free, but credits are required to view details.

The FMP site search is not quite as flexible, but it does allow one to search for 'variants', which would have covered your problem, Janet. A subscription to the site offers unlimited lookups, and one can download the actual images.
