He was 27 in 1893 but he was a soldier so I have no way to trace his address or birth place.

Rosemary,

That is understood but to enable helpers to assist in tracing Alfred Dixon it is necessary to have some idea where and when he was born.

North is the mothers maiden name it is Alfred North/Dixon who is the mystery.

Have you found the family in the 1901 census? If so what is shown as Alfred's birth date and birthplace?

I did look up the address, 71 Brompton Road, Eastney, Portsea Island, Portsmouth, and I get the North family.

My Grandmother was born in September 1892 on the certificate it says mothers name ELIZABETH NORTH nee childs and fathers name as ALFRED NORTH.

Elizabeth got married in March 1893 to ALFRED DIXON (his fathers name is William Thomas Dixon)

I checked the 1991 census, using the address from the birth certificate, and it would seem she was an unmarried mother as she was living with her parents and NORTH was her maiden name, not Childs. My theory is she gave her name as North, when registering the birth, and had to lie about her "husband" and "maiden name"

I can't however trace the Dixon family which might help solve the mystery.

My grandmother was devastated when she found out, as she thought her father wasn't her real father, but I think maybe he was.
