Thanks all; it's really appreciated.

SAFC - where will I find that record? I have checked Anc and there is nothing there for that volume.

I think you have to buy the marriage certificate to get her father's name.

Yes, it does look as if safc has found the correct one. However the date given is the baptism date and Edith could have been any age when she was baptised, so it doesn't help with finding the right birth - especially as the GRO will not now do checking points.

Well, it certainly looks as if safc has the correct one but father's name is William.

There is a picture of Dame Clara Butt here:-

I wouldn't worry too much about ages on the census - some of my lot gained a lot less than 10 years between some census. I dond't think some of them had any idea how old they were.

Going to order the cert;
Coincidence??
There is an Edith M Blacklock - Married a Sinclaire in March 1913; Which could be mistaken for St Clair...

RE my previous post it was a Dame Clara Butt?

Just another q
If the 1911 census is her then she was 23,
1901 census 13 (a possilbe match)
Which should make the 1891 aged 3 - she is listed as aged 7??

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 21 Aug 2010 14:37

A tree on Ancestry says she was born 16 Feb.1891, Newcastle, daughter of William Blacklock & Ann Atkinson.

Edit: OOPS! It's your tree!

MargaretM Report 21 Aug 2010 14:30

There's an Edith Blacklock on the 1891 census but she's 7, making her born 1884. She was born Newcastle and her parents are John & Annie.

There seems a 'rabbit off' which is why it is bugging me.

Just checked incase the informant gave his dads dob but that was 1 June 1887.

There is also a family 'story' that the St Clair was because she was named after a Dame Clara ?? because a relative had been her dresser.

Men are notoriously bad at remembering peoples ages (apologies to men!!), but you would think he would at least have the day and month correct - in which case the Sept. qtr. birth would seem wrong.

I think you really need the marriage certificate to see what age she says she is on there (although again many people lie about their age on marriage certificates). At least it will hopefully give you her father's name.

It was her eldest son who was the informant.

Unfortunately you cannot view certificates online.

Who was the informant on the death certificate?

Edith may not have liked to admit she was older than everyone thought.

Which all fits in; other than the dob from the death certificate.

Is there anywhere online where I can pay to view the certificate; rather than waiting for it to arrive?
