It is supposed to be Edith St Clair Blacklock;
i have the death certificate - which has given me the dob.
I don't know where the 'st clair' came from which is why I am trying to trace the birth so I can order the cert.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Aug 2010 13:53

And what is her fathers name and occupation on her marriage cert.....please.

So we can try to find her on census.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Aug 2010 14:02

I think Joanne may only have the death certificate and NOT the marriage certificate.

Dates of birth on death certificates are only as accurate as the information known to the informant and could be out by a few years.

I don't have her marriage cert; tho it may be I need to request it...

I think I have her on the 1911 census; showing her as aged 23? born in Newcastle.

Thanks
Jo

Marriage cert will be needed for this one I rather think.

It may even have witnesses of her family to try and help find her on census and then her birth under whatever name it may be?

That born in Newcastle one in 1888 is also on 1901.

Name: Edith Blacklock
Age: 13
Estimated birth year: abt 1888
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Annie
Gender: Female
Where born: Newcastle, Northumberland, England

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Aug 2010 14:05

There is this birth:-

Name: Edith Blacklock
Year of Registration: 1887
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Newcastle Upon Tyne
County: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear
Volume: 10b
Page: 84

This would tie in with her age on the 1911 census.

The St Clair bit of her name could have been added at baptism.

Could be the same one in the 1901 census:-

I also think you will need her marriage certificate so you can determine her father's name.

Which all fits in; other than the dob from the death certificate.

Is there anywhere online where I can pay to view the certificate; rather than waiting for it to arrive?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Aug 2010 14:15

Who was the informant on the death certificate?

Edith may not have liked to admit she was older than everyone thought.

Unfortunately you cannot view certificates online.

Joanne

It was her eldest son who was the informant.

Men are notoriously bad at remembering peoples ages (apologies to men!!), but you would think he would at least have the day and month correct - in which case the Sept. qtr. birth would seem wrong.

I think you really need the marriage certificate to see what age she says she is on there (although again many people lie about their age on marriage certificates). At least it will hopefully give you her father's name.

There seems a 'rabbit off' which is why it is bugging me.

Just checked incase the informant gave his dads dob but that was 1 June 1887.

There is also a family 'story' that the St Clair was because she was named after a Dame Clara ?? because a relative had been her dresser.

There's an Edith Blacklock on the 1891 census but she's 7, making her born 1884. She was born Newcastle and her parents are John & Annie.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 21 Aug 2010 14:37

A tree on Ancestry says she was born 16 Feb.1891, Newcastle, daughter of William Blacklock & Ann Atkinson.

Edit: OOPS! It's your tree!
