I am looking for tips on where to go next to confirm the link for two family names, Hardy and Chamberlain.
With the help given in response to my message on the Records Office board I have:
Daniel Chamberlain (born ? died 1842 Pancras) who married Sarah FIELD 23 Nov 1795 at St Mary, St Marylebone Road, Marylebone. Witnesses: Benjamin Hardy & John Willcock. Daniel Chamberlain had the following children that I know of. All christened at St Mary, St Marylebone Rd. William born 6th Jan 1796 – christened 20 Mar 1796 Susannah Hardy Chamberlain born 16 Jul 1797 – christened 3 Sept 1797 – burial 9 Sept 1798 James Hardy Chamberlain born 14 Jul 1799 – christened 15 Sept 1799 Susannah Chamberlain christened 24 Jan 1802 – christened ???? – burial 14 Aug 1803 Sarah Chamberlain born 20 Dec 1804 – christened 17 Feb 1805 Caroline Hardy Chamberlain born 30 Aug 1808 – christened 29 Oct 1809 Matilda Hardy Chamberlain born 12 Jan 1812 – christened 6 Feb 1812/3 (?)
In the record for the baptism of Matilda it shows her father Daniel Chamberlain’s occupation as Sexton of St Mary-le-Bone.
Benjamin Hardy was also a witness at another wedding on the 3rd November 1795 to a John Hun & Mary Wrenshall. I wondered if there is any record of Benjamin being involved with the church and that he may have acted as a marriage witness for many people.
I have obtained a copy of Benjamin Hardy’s will, it states his wife was Sarah Hardy and the will was witnessed by Daniel & Sarah Chamberlain. Although I am struggling to read the will I am almost certain it mentions James Hardy Chamberlain as his grandson. James Hardy Chamberlain was an attorney at law & solicitor. So if this is correct who is Benjamin Hardy’s child, Daniel or Sarah? There is one marriage record that has shown up for a Benjamin Hardy and that is to Sarah Field 5 April 1779, and if this is him then it has confused me even more as to how he can be James Hardy Chamberlains Grandfather.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Thanks Trish

bear with me I'm reading this wrongly possibly
you have Benjamin Hardy marrying Sarah Field 1779
then a Sarah Field marrying Daniel Chamberlain 1795
possibly...Sarah Field the elder is Sarah Field the youngers mother...second marriage? making Benjamin the step-grandfather to James?
BUT looking at image I see that Sarah the elder is down as spinster.... so that's not helpful lol

An "out of left field" suggestion: The marriage of Benj.Hardy to Sarah Field was in 1779. The Marriage of Sarah Field to Daniel Chamberlain was in 1795. It is quite possible then that the later Sarah's birth was before 1779 (otherwise she would be under 16 - not impossible but...) Therefore, maybe younger Sarah is older Sarah's illegitimate child. If Benjamin Hardy was her actual father, then maybe she married under her "original" name as her groom was the sexton and knew she was baptised as Field. Maybe Benjamin wasn't her actual father, but brought her up, hence why he was a witness, Either way, he was obviously important to her, as many of the children had Hardy as a middle name. ........Or this could be rubbish!!!! ;-) I'd probably start looking for a Sarah Field baptised to a Sarah Field, no father, in about 1770-1778, starting my search in whichever parish the hardy/Field wedding was.
