I have a Great Aunt who died in 1902 at the age of 24. I sent for the death cert which said she died from pnemonia brought on after an operation called a gasto enterostemy for a swollen stomach. My mother recalls a 'naughty girl' in this family who probably got pregnant out of wedlock and I was wondering if this 'operation' could in fact have been the doc's way of describing an illegal abortion? I am not a medical person so wouldn't know exactly what the op was- only she died a week later. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

I don't think this operation would have been mentioned on the death certificate if this person hadn't actually had it. This is what google has to say about a gastroenterostomy:- |

it could be gossip you know, leading to a story being passed down about a naughty girl |
