It sometimes pays to be cheeky.

My Ancestry membership was due for renewal recently. As per their normal practice Ancestry sent me an email beforehand advising me of the forthcoming event and telling me that there was no need for me to take any action as they would take payment of my subscription directly from my bank account.

A couple of days before my existing subscription was due to expire I decided to give them a call (Freephone 0800 404 9723) during which I pointed out that Find My Past gave their existing subscribers a 20% "Loyalty" discount at renewal time and asked whether Ancestry offered a similar arrangement.

"No" said the Ancestry employee "But I can offer you a 25% discount from our normal subscription rates if you decide to stay with us"

"Fair enough" says I "In which case I will stay with Ancestry"

The result was that I saved £38.80.

N.B. The actual procedure being that effectively your existing Ancestry membership is cancelled and you take out a new subscription at the reduced payment rate. There are no problems with the cancellation as you still retain all your existing details and access to your existing family trees on Ancestry is unaffected. In fact the old membership cancellation / new membership initiation is instantaneous so apart from the extra money still in your pocket you will not notice any change whatsoever.

It's a pity that Ancestry doesn't follow Findmypast in offering a discount. With time as your tree builds your usage tends to decline, however the costs generally continue to rise.

Wouldn't it be nice to have an annual discount for continuous membership that would reflex the above.

Having to watch the £'s at the moment I have reverted back to the basic package after my Worldwide membership at £78 expired.

I do appreciate they are a business and need to make money but wouldn't it be nice to have some sort of loyalty award.

Paul,

£78 for worldwide seems cheap, I just paid £116 instead of £155, I have had worldwide 2 years now and still dont know how to use it properly, I think I am going to have to ask for help.

Regards
Sandra

do most of you have world wide membership. I have been offered 10% off on a premium membership!

Can anyone advise which could be better to have find my past explorer at £89.95 or Ancestry premium that will cost me 96.66

Chrissie2394 Report 27 Sep 2010 19:23

I have the premium membership and was offered the 25% discount. I couldn't get on with Findmypast, much prefer Ancestry.

Evening All

My subscription is due for renewal. So I will be renewing through National Trust as the lady at Ancestry advised to get my 25% off.
