My mum in laws mum was not married to her dad, but was still married (to someone else) and the 2 records show her with her dads name and the surname that the mother had at the time mum in law was born. It said on the birth cert that she was formally known as ****. |

In the case of unmarried parents as long as the father attends the register office or makes a declaration acknowledging he is the father then the entry in the register appears under both surnames asthe child is legally entittled to use either name. |

Hi can anyone help me? Why would a child born out of wedlock in the 1930's have her birth registered twice, once with her mothers surname & once with her fathers surmane? Which one would be her correct surname? Is this a normal occurance? |
