It depends what years you are searching, after 1912 mothers maiden names were included in the indexes, so Free BMD is a good starting point especially if you have a location also.

If you post some details regarding locations etc, there are lots of people on here that have knowledge of locating records for all over the UK and abroad.

Bob, you have to start with what you know and work backwards, this may mean buying birth or marriage certs. Then you can begin to search Cenus returns back from 1911 or you could search Trees on here.
FreeBMD have the indexes for BMD's from 1837 up to about 1935 (it is free)

After 1912 the mmn was added to the birth index so that makes searching a bit easier.

You will be on a steep but fascinating learning curve

i'm new to genes and would welcome info on how i might find any children of named parents and likewise parents of children or their siblings,
