Depending on the area they lived he could also be a Tinsmith or a Whitesmith.

Does he give any birth place on later census?

Hi I have my Great Grandparents marriage certificate.
George Wilson & Rachel Woodcock
9th. April 1849 St.John The Baptist Shoreditch London.
I am trying to find George's Birth or Christening date.
On the MC it says they were of full age & gives his Father as Thomas who was a Smith.I can find no record of any Thomas who was a Smith .How important is the occupation in this context? & what other occupation could it be?
I have found George on the census after his marriage but not before.( He ws a Chimney Sweep)
As I was adoptd at birth I am anxious to find more out about myself
