Are you aware they do some family tree workshops? I've been to one and am doing another in May about Parish registers - only £5 a session and nice to meet up with others who have the same interests.

Thank you all for your help in this matter, I have now got to find the time to go to Birmingham library but will probably have to wait until after the Easter holidays and children back at school.

I think more than likely it is St Bartholomew's but will check and let you know.

Hi Andrea, have just Googled "Parish Church Edgbaston"

Someone had already asked this question on forum.birminghamhistory.co.uk re a marriage cert for 1858.

She was told that it is (was?) St Bartholomews Church.

Well worth a look as there are some photos on the Forum, that you can see, if you are registered.

The certificate does not give a church name it just says in the parish of Edgbaston.

Yes the church you mentioned is the one I am thinking of but I didn't realise it was a COE church. I was thinking of calling the library on Tuesday who will probably tell me.

The addresses I had were Fisher Street and Vauxhall Street. I'm not sure whereabout Fisher Street is in relation to Birmingham as I do not have my old maps with me at the moment.

Hi Andrea.

Not sure why you do not know the name of the Church - are you just unable to read what is written?

I think I know which church you mean - is it near the botanical gardens, Westbourne Rd? This is St. George C of E.
Why do you have a specific church in mind though?

Also, what addresses do they give as this might offer a clue also?

Hi Jan, and anybody else who helped me with this thread last week, I received my certificate back yesterday and the church they married in which came under Kings Norton was the Parish of Edgbaston - I amnot sure what it is called but I think it might be the Church as you go up Broad Street over the island towards Harborne it is on the left handside a bit of an island really just past there is Egbaston Girls School.

Thanks for the info Jan, I spoke to the registar office on Monday and I decided just to bit the bullet and get the certificate - I knew I would in the end - Not that I have any reason to think this but I get a feeling the marriage certificate might come back as being a registry office wedding. I have been on another forfum and they say that registrar office weddings started in 1837 along with civil registration.

At the risk of sounding like a total geek, this is history of Kings Norton registration district:

Registration County : Worcestershire (1837-1912); Warwickshire (1912-24).
Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.9.1924 (succeeded by Birmingham South district).

It has never come under Staffordshire, but the boundaries around that area have been very fluid, so it does get a bit blurry!

Even as a local I had no idea till starting my research that Kings Norton was a much bigger area than Birmingham in the 19th century. This caused me no end of grief for a while Suffice it to say that looking at the present Kings Norton is of no relevance whatsoever as it is just a small suburb of Birmingham now.

I think the Hugh Wallis site lists the churches in Kings Norton.

I've got rellies that came from that way, and Kings Norton came under Staffford. on the certs is has Registation district Kings Norton sub district Harborne in the county of Stafford. the earliest one is dated 1841. hope this is of use.

The price is also increasing from local register offices.

I have decided to apply for the certificate, I am convinced althought it is in Kings Norton it will probably be right on the outskirts of birmingham but hopefully I should know by the end of the week. Everything conected to this part of the family is a pain!

Jan is quite right. I was too hasty in leaping onto the obvious. Getting the certificate might save you a great deal of time.

Sadly I think you are correct, I just wanted to save myself a few pounds. The new £9 for a certificate is a lot don't you think it really makes you have to think twice if you really need it or of you can find the information else where first. Nevermind
