Does any one know of an easy to access web site where I can search for births in Canada
ThanksGrandfather 'lost' in history - born in Canada c1878. I've tried searching Canadian census' and birth records in Canada - but as I don't know exactly where in Canada he was born it will be too time consuming to find my grandfather 's family in this way. So I am trying another route. My mother says that their was always a 'medal' or citation from the 'King' on the wall in my grandmother's home for bravery or services to this country during WW1. My paternal grandfather travelled backwards and forwards from Canada rounding up horses and transporting them over to Britain for the army. He settled in Britain after marrying my paternal grandmother in 1917 where he carried on his trade in horses.
Would there be a record anywhere of his award for 'bravery'?
Or could there be business directories for the 1920's that would list his business.
I don't suppose these would give me anymore information about his birth place but at lease this would give me some extra info about him as I know little or nothing.
Thanks Linda

Thanks Jonesey
I have looked on the Canadian census' - but as someone remarked on a previous post it's like looking for a needle in a haystack! The website I was using only indexed individuals and it was almost impossible to 'marry' a family together. I have been searching for my grandfather for over a year and have never got any further than his marriage certificate to my grandmother in 1917 in Camberwell!

PS to above
when I was looking for a marriage I 'googled' untill I came up with a local family history forum
eg: Hamilton Branch Ontario Genealogical Society
http://www.hwcn.org/link/HBOGS/ I was able to find a marriage I had been searching for

I'll try these web sites. I think the www.collections etc. is the one I've tried already and although it does have census records they are very disjointed. I think you have to know more than I do at the moment to make them work.
Thanks again.

The fact that he married your grandmother in 1917 makes it sound as if he could be a soldier in WW1. If so check this site for attestation papers for soldiers of WW1 in Canada:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html
This same site also has all of the censuses in Canada.

Why not post the name here, Linda? Some of us who have more experience navigating the Canadian sites might have better luck finding him.

Jonesey - since when did the UK have a national register - currently, if I'm looking for UK BMDs I have to check Southport, Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh, and if I sloppily allow UK to include the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, then also St Helier, St Peter Port and Douglas need to be checked too. Hardly seems like a national register to me.

Hi Margaret
My Grandfather's name is George Alfred White and according to his marriage certificate he was 35 years old in 1917. But my grandmother was also stated as 35 years old too and I know she was born before the 1881 census. I have checked some of the Canadian army attestation papers but haven't found anything that seems correct. All I know about my grandfather is he was born in Canada and cames over to Britain to sell horses to the army during the WW1.
Thanks Linda

Hi MargaretManson
Yes it is - It's also George Alfred White - General Foreman - Deceased. On my father's birth certificate his father's occupation was Horsekeeper and they lived in Johns Mews, Holborn, London in 1919.

Hi Jonesey
Does it state whether George is single on the 1911 census because on his marriage certificate it says he was a bachelor. My grandmother was a widow as she had been married before.
Thanks Linda
Oops sorry didn't see the Status: Single - I got confused seeing Margaret E 33. That can't be his mother? too young! - is it a sister or sister-in-law?

Jonesey - looks OK now.

That says his pob=O(ntario). Now BMDs are closed in Ont for 100/85/70 y (well, technically deaths aren't closed, but no index is published for 70 y, so to get the d.cert you practically have to know what it says anyway). http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-906.006-e.html#f

It seems Albert homesteaded on Concession 1 Lot 27W in Marlborough Twp in Carleton Co. It's almost the most SW-ly lot in the county. http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/showrecord.php?PersonID=5086 http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/car-m-marlborough.jpg It looks like the standard 200 acre lot here is 25 chains x 80 chains. The nearby village of Burritts Rapids still exists.

Whoa
How many websites have they got in Canada?
My mind is going to mush just looking at all those different letters and numbers!
It may be sometime before I surface again if I have to search everyone of these
Thanks Linda

would you be able to find out which of the services he was in, probably army - if you can find that out you could look at a website for that regiment
