I would think WW1 would put the mockers on naming kids Wilhelmina.

The appendix of names in Chambers Dictionary (1998) gives Minnie as a diminutive for Mary, May or Wilhelmina.

No can't find a death for her , I am pretty sure the marriage would have taken plac in Scotland, my grandad never ventured away from Glasgow, that I know of.

His death certificate is dated 1962.

Thank you all for your input, just going back to S.P to have another look , maybe I have missed something.

In 2004 / 5 there are over 200 girls registered with Minnie as a given name, ....for some it was their 1st name.

Can you find a death for Minnie (surname) in between the 2 marriages that you know about.?

Could the marriage have been in England or elsewhere.?
What year was the death certificate that you have recently received?

Here some information I found on Ancestry from Jennette Hope. Liz:

Minnie was a common abbreviation for Wilhelmina, though it was often given as a name in its own right. It seems to have been extremely popular in the 1870-80s - in one of my families (in Sydney Australia), three sisters each named one of their daughters Minnie within that decade, which has always seemed rather excessive to me. There was no earlier history of Wilhelmina or Minnie in the family so I assume it was the current fashion, but I don't know the source. Perhaps some celebrity of the time? A singer? A character in a popular book?

Princess Wilhelmina (Baden, Germany, later Qyeen of Netherlands) was born in 1880, but there are no obvious English royal connections that I'm aware of to explain the popularity. The only other point is that in all my ancestral families the older method of naming children after mothers, fathers, and grandparents breaks down around this time: Minnie is only one of a number of unusual and romantic names that suddenly appear, including patriotic ones. There's obviously big some social change involved.

However I think the name was given the kiss of death when Walt Disney named Minnie Mouse. I'd be interested to know if anyone named their child Minnie after this.

I have two Minnie's in my family tree. Both were registered with Minnie in their own right.

Hi Gwyn,
Yes I think there must have been a third marriage to Minnie, I have found his first two but cannot seem to find the 3rd , so I wondered if Minnie might have been short for something.

Was there perhaps yet another marriage...?

I have 2 Minnies in my tree, where it is their given registered name.

Thank you for replying,
I have just received my grandad's death certificate and it shows him to be a widower of 1st. my grandmother which I knew and 2nd to a lady with 1st name Minnie.
I have looked on Scotlands people for that marriage bot nothing coming up with that christian name or her surname .
I know he was married a 2nd time but that lady's name is nothing like the name on his death cert.
Hope I haven't confused you too much !!

Jean
Sorry should have added he was born , married and died in Glasgow.
