I went through all the orginal census for woolwich dockyard all 5 districts found 1 john parton from scotland and another from surrey, so if he was in the army then maybe he was abroad.

Yup, that was my original suggestion. ;) --

If he was in the military in 1881 he might very well have been out of England. The second Anglo-Afghan war was 1878-1880, e.g. (My gr-grfather apparently deserted c1878 after 5 years in India when the promised discharge turned into being "stop-lossed" to Afghanistan.) The English evacuation was in 1881.

I checked at FIBIS for any record of him marrying in India, for example, but no luck.

I agree with you he must of been abroad!!!!
But don`t you find it strange that we cant find his family in 1881 census either. I may have found john`s father in 1891 widowed living in staffs maybe the men were abroad and emma, susannah, and john`s wife died.
