If anyone can help i`d be really grateful!!!!!!

John Parton abt 1857 newcastle staffs or stoke on trent
I found him in 1901,1891 census at woolwich dockyard Gunner Royal artillery with his wife martha jane and in 1871 living with parents and siblings in newcastle under lyme. His marriage cert to martha jane 1888 woolwich kent says he is widowed.
Im going mad searching the 1881 census for him, i need this info to narrow down whether or not he was married then and where he was.

I can't find any sign of any Partons in 1881.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 15 Feb 2010 07:43

Neither can I. For example tried looking for Rosannah, no surname, etc. etc. but just can't find them. I have ancestry, I wonder if someone with FMP might fare better?

Jan has invited me to take a look, so I'll just put the 1891 here for ref too:

Name: John Parton
Age: 34
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Martha Jane
Gender: Male
Where born: Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire, England

Civil parish: Woolwich
ED, institution, or vessel: Royal Artillery Barracks

John Parton 34 - gunner
Martha Jane Parton 23
Agatha Baker 3

I was wanting to see whether there might have been any children from a first marriage, but no.

If he was in the military in 1881 he might very well have been out of England. The second Anglo-Afghan war was 1878-1880, e.g. (My gr-grfather apparently deserted c1878 after 5 years in India when the promised discharge turned into being "stop-lossed" to Afghanistan.) The English evacuation was in 1881.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Anglo-Afghan_War

I checked at FIBIS for any record of him marrying in India, for example, but no luck.

And I don't have FMP so I'm a tad useless so far ...

Annabella -- do you know / have you contacted the person at Ancestry who made the name correction?

1871 England Census
Name: John Paston
[John Parton]

It was made in Sept 2009 and the person who made it was logged in to Ancestry yesterday, so if you don't know them, I'd certainly do that. I've made terrific contacts through corrections/notes I've added at Ancestry, and I just notice that very often people don't follow them up.

JaneyCanuck Report 17 Feb 2010 16:54

Here's an annoying thing -- looking for possible first marriages, this looks like a candidate:

Marriages Mar 1880
Hill Mary Stoke T 6b 202
Malpas Jane Stoke T 6b 202
Mountford Walter Stoke T. 6b 202
Parton John Stoke T. 6b 202

Wondering whether we might find something by searching for a possible bride in 1881. So let's rule out Walter Mountford's wife: Mary or Jane. But no, there's Walter Mountford, married, living with his father, and wifeless. and no sign of the wife elsewhere that I can see. Grr.

Now, my gr-grfather's sequence was that he married in 1872, child born 1873, wife died immediately after, went and joined the army, returned before 1881, remarried 1883. I wonder whether John's was something similar? Widowed young, joined up ...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 Feb 2010 17:20

Births Jun 1867
Parton Susannah Newcastle L. 6b 61

Don't see any death; only possible marriages are 1885 Northwich, 1901 Dudley. Don't see her in 81 or 91. Just repeating Jan's work. ;)

Just a tip for searching Ancestry - mgnv recently updated me on this.

You can now use the wildcard * anywhere in the name, except the first letter, as long as there are three letters include.

E.g., search for P*on ... as I've been doing to no avail. ;)

Hi there,

FMP is useless nothing on there, the john parton in 1881 wife mary is not my john they come up again in a later census, is the marriage you found them!!!!
Im on ancestry Martin family tree profile annabella07, ive searched this part of the parton family that much i cant see for looking, ive got info off other members aswell so im confusing myself tring to work out if that info is right.
I think you may be right about him joining the army after he was widowed. Its just odd that we cant find the parents and silbings in 1881 i cant find a marriage reg for his parents william and emma also.
Im so grateful to you all for helping me

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Feb 2010 01:11

Looks like the best match for brother George:

Births Sep 1865
PARTON George Ernest Newcastle L. 6b 56

Marriages Jun 1891
Bailey Annie Newcastle L. 6b 125
Downs John Campbell Newcastle L. 6b 125
Parton George Ernest Newcastle L. 6b 125
Swanwick Harriet Newcastle L. 6b 125

and in 1911

PARTON GEORGE E 1866 45 Newcastle under Lyme Staffordshire
PARTON ANNIE 1873 38
PARTON ELSIE MAY 1892 19
PARTON FLORENCE MARY 1893 18
PARTON ANNIE 1905 6
PARTON JESSIE DORIS 1907 4

-- I think that's how it breaks down, maybe someone with a sub can check.

... Well ..............

1891

Name: George Parton
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1866
Relation: Brother
Gender: Male
Where born: Newcastle, Staffordshire, England

Civil parish: Newcastle Under Lyme

James Parton 36 - head, single, publican
George Parton 25 - single, waggon builder
> Annie Barley 19 > it's Bailey of course - servant
Caroline Howell 67 - servant

So looks like a different George Parton ...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 18 Feb 2010 01:30

Another possible for George in 1891.

And this one's an interesting coincidence for unrelated reasons.

Name: George Spratt
[George Parton]
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1869
Relation: Son - not
Father's Name: George - not
Mother's Name: Mary Agnes - not
Where born: Stafford, Staffordshire, England
occupation: Pte, East Surrey Regiment

Civil parish: Kingston On Thames
Town: Kingston
County/Island: Surrey

>> ED, institution, or vessel: The Barracks 31st Regimental District on Thames

The total moron who transcribed this "household" has given every last man in the barracks the surname of the couple who precedes them in the list -- because, yes, the moron who made up the list back in 1891 called them all "son". So Ancestry just disregarded their surnames completely.

The coincidence is that not two weeks ago I found someone in that list in relation to a search on the boards here. I only found him because someone completely unrelated had gone through the list one by one and submitted corrections to Ancestry for each name. I sent that person a fan letter!

And now Ancestry has come along behind him ... and assigned ech surname that he entered for each person in the list to every other person on this list. So each person is now shown as having several dozen alternate names. This is an atrocity beyond most I have witnessed at Ancestry.

Anyway. There we have a George Parton of the rightish time and place, in the military in 1891.

I'd say maybe there's a good chance both brothers had made that career choice - ?

Anything is possible ...

1881

Name: John Parker
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1858
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire, England
>> Occupation: Potters Presser
Condition as to marriage - Unmarried

Civil parish: Stoke Upon Trent
County/Island: Staffordshire
Charles Gibbons 69
Elizabeth Gibbons 59
William Gibbons 32
Samuel Gibbons 28
Lucy Gibbons 17
James Parker 9 - lodger
John Parker 23

However, there are births to match that John and James, and while I can't see the John in 1871 he could be the one in 1861 in Penkhull with parents Richard (a potter) and Eliza.
