Hi Annabella. The Newcastle Under Lyme Worhouse records can be found as follows -

County - Staffordshire
Civil Parish - Newcastle Under Lyme
Enumeration District - 11
Images 48 - 53.

No Levi Martin on them i'm afraid.

William martin ( ann`s first husband) must of died before 1851 so why would levi change his name to martin also in 1871 levi preston is at school and on levi martin`s marriage cert there`s an x ( his mark is written by it) so he couldnt read or write ( probably because he went to work so young.

The poor in madeley comes under the union of newcastle under lyme can anyone find the workhouse census for 1861 im having no luck!!!!!

Hi Annabella
Just a thought, have you tried looking for a birth of Martin Levi as both names are interchangeable as surname and christian name and mistakes do happen.

You may be right i cant find any records for levi preston after 1871.
Thanks for your help i`ll try this theory

I agree 10 would be quite unusual to be recorded as a worker, though my great-grandfather was down as a carriage lamp maker in 1871 aged 12.

It is also possible to explain away the name difference of the father on the marriage certificate, since James would be his stepfather's Christian name (if he is Levi Preston), and Levi might not have recalled that his father had been named William.

One point that does make me hesitant about the theory of Levi Preston/Levi Martin is that Levi Preston is only 10 in 1871 - and 4 months old in 1861. To my mind, that seems slightly young to be a farmworker in 1871, and the farmer recorded Levi Martin as older than that - what do others think?

Hi Annabella07

Just because someone is recorded twice on the census does not mean that they are not the same person ... if Levi Preston/Levi Martin are the same person, who usually lived with his mother and stepfather, and walked to work* most days (it is around the same distance that the Candleford children walked to school each day), but happened to stay over at work on the night of the census, he might well have been recorded twice. I understand that Charles Darwin was recorded twice on one census.

[*Edit: assuming that the farm is near Checkley between Bridgemer and Wrine Hill, and Madeley is a few miles south east of Checkley, close to Madeley Heath, now on the M6?]

In your case, it might well make sense for Levi to be known as Martin to most of the community (i.e. his stepfather's surname), but to be recorded as Preston by his own family.

(Not to say that this is the case here, but it remains possible...)

Hi netty My levi is working in nantwich in 1871 so he cant be levi Preston also fathers name on marriage cert is james martin. Ann preston`s first husband was william martin. There is a william Martin working with levi in 1871 i thought he might be related to Levi ( i found out that he is the son of william martin and Ann (preston). Where levi signed his name on marriage cert it has an X levi martin ( his mark) there is a ellen grocott as a witness.
Death cert gives no clues.
There was a poor house ( work house) near madeley in newcastle under lyme im having trouble finding any poor union records for 1861

Hi Annabella, sorry that you've had no luck in tracking down the birth of Levi Martin as yet.

I've been looking over the Census records again, i can not find Levi Preston after 1871 ?. My gut feeling is that Levi was born a Preston and changed his name to Martin at a later date.

If no other birth record can be found by anyone, i would be so tempted to order the Levi Preston birth certificate, if only to check the details and discount it.

Sorry i couldn't help further.

Sorry Annabella, searched every image, page by page, district 18 - 20, Madeley, Staffordshire 1861, no sign of a Levi Martin anywhere, no sign of a birth that fits either !.

Also checked images for Wybunbury, Cheshire 1861.

Fathers name james martin on marriage cert. He was married on dec 30th 1884 age 24 so he must be somewhere in 1861 census, ive searched using just levi birth year and place but nothing. In 1871 he`s working with william martin i linked him to preson family he is ann preson son from first marriage to william martin. I found Levi Preson in 1871 census.

Annabella,

Do you have his parents on census? I can see him 1871/1911 the latter he is in Madeley with his own family.

Was he the first born? it may be possible that he was registered in his mothers name if the parents were not married at the time of birth, or was the mothers child by a different partner?
