The 1861 census gives Richard's pob=Oswaldtwistle (misspelled), which is in Blackburn RD.
However, Accrington, just 3km away is in Haslingden RD.
I think Richard wasn't Newton's kid, but an earlier illeg child of Maria.

I've listed all Richard Entwis*le 1851-1854 on FreeBMD [and appended mother's MS + local ref].
(Haslingden is incomplete on LancsBMD - sub-RDs: Haslingden only thru 1851; Rawtentstall undone.)

Births
1851q1 Entwisle Richard Blackburn 21 72 [SHORROCK D/17/93]
1851q1 Entwisle Martha Blackburn 21 72 [HAWORTH D/17/94]
1851q1 Entwistle Richard Stockport 19 309 [ HYD/18/25]
1851q2 Entwisle Richard Blackburn 21 77 [DUCKWORTH D/18/46]
1851q4 Entwisle Richard Bolton 21 220
1851q4 Entwistle Richard James Shoreditch 2 437
1852q1 ENTWISTLE Richard Haslingden 8e 104 [ENTWISLE ACC/11/100]
1852q1 ENTWISTLE Richard Bolton 8c 273
1853q1 Entwisle Richard Haslingden 8e 124
1853q2 Entwistle Richard Haslingden 8e 12[09]
1853q4 ENTWISTLE Richard Ormskirk 8b 469 [ LAT/5/100]
1854q2 ENTWISLE Richard Blackburn 8e 363 [TITTLEY D/23/2]
1854q4 Entwistle Richard Rochdale 8e 53 [ WUW/11/345]

[sub-RD codes are: ACC=Accrington,D=Darwen,LAT=Lathom,HYD=Hyde,WUW=Wuerdle and Wardle]

My guess would be one of the Haslingdon regos, prob 1952q1, but maybe 1853q1 or 1853q2.

If you were to get this b.cert, I'ld recommend buying it from Preston:

Certificate Services, Quayside Court, Chain Caul Way, Preston, PR2 2ZP. Tel: 01772 326881.

I am going to order Newton & Maria's marriage cert and Richard's death too.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 29 Dec 2009 23:41

I think Thomas is possibly a red herring as if Alice'birth was registered March qtr & Thomas June qtr (the only ones I could find in Blackburn dist) it is physically impossible

there is this possible scenario

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1851
ENTWISTLE James
HARGREAVES Maria
Bury, St.Mary

Births Mar 1853 (>99%)
Hargreaves Richard Blackburn 8e 322

but really only clutching at straws

maybe the marriage cert of Newton & Maria would help

Both Joseph and Newtons deaths are also Witton Blackburn, making the death i found you for Richard more probable........

CLARK Joseph 2 Witton Blackburn W/7/83

CLARK Newton 24 Witton Blackburn W/7/77

Aye, Newton died of consumption aged 24 on 15th Jan 1862 and his daughter Jane was born on 16th Jan1862...day after his death.
Joseph died 13th march 1862 aged 2 from TB .
Poor Maria ..she lived right to 1901 with Jane .

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 29 Dec 2009 23:23

Heres the entry from freeBMD with the reference numbers........
Deaths Dec 1864 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Entwistle Richard Blackburn 8e 266

if you don`t get any other leads it may be worth ordering the cert....as its a child death it should say { I think} child of .......which would confirm correct person, if it is him, what a terrible time for Maria, losing her husband and 2 of her children within a year or so...

Just found this..... age would fit in with Richard Clarke/Entwistle born c1853....

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1864
Surname Forename(s) Age Sub-District Registers At Reference
ENTWISTLE Richard 12 Witton Blackburn W/8/76

Just a thought but Maria Entwistle did have a brother called Richard aged 4 on 1841 census.. I wonder if is it him ? and there's a mistake on the transcription detail.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 29 Dec 2009 23:09

I have checked Lancs BMD and can`t find any Richard Entwistle births in the right timescale........ but birth registeration wasn`t compulsory then, and if he was illigitamate he may not have been registered at all.

Is there a chance Maria may have remarried after Newtons death? If so Richard may be listed under a step fathers surname...
