My gr gr grandmother is shown on her marriage certificate as Margaret Williams born in London. She married James Cuzick in 1892. On the birth certifcates of her first four children she states her maiden name as Williams. On the birth certificate for her last child she states her maiden name as Fitzwilliams. To confuse matters further on the 1901 census she states she was born in London but on the 1911 cencus is says she was born in Ulverston in Cumbria. Can anyone help with an explanation for why she felt the need to lie? |

Maybe she didn't lie & no-one heard her say the Fitz part |

That's my problem Julie she wasn't married on the previous census and with a name like Margaret Williams its impossible to find her. Then of course I don't know if she was born in London or Cumbria. All I know is that her father was John Williams and he had died by the time she was married in 1892. |

You say her marriage certificate says she was born London but I didn't think a marriage certificate showed place of birth. |

Maybe it's her address? Won't be birthplace though as you say. |

Sorry, it was on the 1901 census that said she was born in London not marriage certificate. The witnesses on the certificate are family members from the Cuzick side. She was only 18. The address was the address of another member of the Cuzick family. |

Thanks for the meaning of Fitz. The name of her last child where she indicated her maiden name as Fitzwilliams was Lord George Cuzick. |

Her address on the marriage certificate is 16 New Hall Street, Dudley. |

The chances are that as she married in Staffordshire she was working there in 1891. This is a maybe. She was only around 17 when she married |

Thanks Choccy you might be right that she is living next door but it says she was born in Dudley, that makes three birthplaces. Gets more complicated. Thanks everyone for your help. |
