People changing their birth names is not uncommon, many of us have come across cases where people have added a middle name they were not born with. In your particular case there could be many reasons. E.g Thomas Cook may have been involved in some sort of family dispute and for personal reasons decided to change his family name. It could also be something as simple as a personal idiosyncrasy. |
