Thanks everyone. Such a lot to take in and analyse! I've never heard of anyone baptising twins on separate days and in separate churches---maybe there are twoJefferson /Jepherson families out there. I'll have to do some more hunting. |

It was also common to name a child after one of the godparents, in the hope that said godparent would be generous to the child ..... this could either be monetary or in sponsorship |

An ancestor of mine named William Chick b.1773 in Portsmouth had a younger sister Ann b.1776. She married James Spencer Jefferson probably born in Alverstoke 1775. He was obviously considered an important member of the family because William called one of his sons Spencer Jefferson and the name Spencer is used in other branches of the family, BUT I can't find out anything about him and he really intrigues me. Has anyone any suggestions about how I can track him down? I've tried old newspaper files with no luck. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. |
