What exciting things happen while I'm asleep in bed!!! Once more I arrive on scene to find that clever ozbird has solved a problem for me!!! What a rat that John Osbourne must have been. My poor ancestor was literally left holding the baby while he went on to greater things!
Thanks a million, now my NZ cousin and I can sit and simmer with resentment that he just got on with his life while poor Jane Broadhurst never married! And to think his daughter, Sarah lived just up the road from where I was born and bred in Handsworth!
AM very impressed, Ozbird, thank you, Perhaps I shall be as clever as you one day!
Jill

Some may be a bit old, two are definitely too young, but there's more than one John Osbourne/variants.

1841:

John Osborn abt 1826 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire
John Osborne abt 1766 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire
John Osborne abt 1774 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire
John Osbourn abt 1801 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire
John Osbourn abt 1821 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire
John Osbourn abt 1836 Staffordshire, England Walsall, Staffordshire

Still no sign of the Osbourne family - the only John Osbourne and family in Walsall in 1841census. Where did they go - a currier and his wife and five children?

Heehee, Ann
Any idea how I go about looking up migration? My mind boggles a bit as I feel it is pointless unless I know ship and port of departure. Perhaps I could get someone to look on the Canadian census or American Census - and the list goes on.
hmmm
cheers,
Jill

I'm beginning to get hysterical now, Ann, with all the great info you are giving me.... Thanks for the tip on where to look on the Mormon site.
But I am still wondering where that mysterious John Osbourne went after 1841!!!!!!! I'm wondering if the Catholic priest , James O'Farrell, who Jane Broadhurst worked for had anything to do with him emigrating or something after getting poor Jane pregnant - or should I say "with child"?? Am I letting my imagination run away with me?
cheers, Jill

This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a habitational name from a minor place so called, perhaps from Broadhurst Manor Farm in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. The placename is derived from the Middle English (1200 - 1500) "brode", from the Olde English pre 7th Century "brad", meaning broad, given as a nickname for a stout or fat person, and the Olde English "hurst", a wooded hill. The first element could also be a descriptive term for the broad wood. In the Middle Ages, to call a person broad or fat was considered to be a compliment, as it was looked on as a sign of grandeur. The surname, however, could also be locational from one of the seven to ten thousand villages and hamlets which have disappeared in Britain since circa 1100, due to such natural disasters as the Black Death of 1348, in which an eighth of the population perished, or to the widespread practice of "clearing" large areas of land to make sheep pastures during the height of the wool-trade in the 15th Century. The place is thought to have been in Cheshire, due to the large number of recordings in this county, and the name has the same derivation as the place in Sussex. Recorded in the Cheshire Church Registers is the marriage of John Broadhurst and Alice Wood, on October 8th 1594, at Prestbury. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roger de Brodhurst, which was dated 1281, witness in the "Assize Rolls of Lancashire", during the reign of King Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1271 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Ann, you're amazing! Thanks for all your work. I had to go to bed but got up to find you were still at it! But I still don't know what happened to the John Osbourne who was the named father of Fanny Broadhurst by her mother Jane Broadhurst!
I knew that on one record they were called BRODHURST and have seen that and think it must have been the Black Country accent that caused the mistake! I found the same thing when my Birmingham ROATH family were recorded as ROTH and ROAF on occasions.
Sometimes family history is like walking through treacle - or cotton wool.
cheers,
Jill
