If you ask for a reference check when applying from GRO online stating father must be Edward, they will only charge you £3.00 or £4.00 if that is not the fathers name, or you could always try the local register office for Dudley/Midlands and phone them...if you get a helpful member of staff they may do the check for you. |

Thanks insomnia...wasn`t sure it was the right office.....agree local offices are often better, and far more helpful than the GRO... |

Thanks Nicky & insomnia, I'll do that - I can't find either Edward or Joseph on the 1861 or 1871 census, and think Edward may have died in 1857 anyway. |

Hi Jim, it seems almost certain that is my Joseph - thinking his father Edward died & his mother Louisa married Emmanuel Oakley, but just wanted to make sure as I have found 4 possible marriages for an Edward Bate in Dudley - also found a birth for Joseph Oakley (1853) which confused me further. |
