Presumably the named man was the child's father and his name was given to the registrar by the child's mother when asked. |

This is called a numbered error and is an error that can be corrected BEFORE the Registrar has signed the registration as complete. After the Registrar has signed the entry, corrections can only be made by a formal correction which neccesitates a note in the margin giving an explanation |

I think those #s are standard correction #s. Why not phone/email the GRO or local office where you got it from and ask them what the #s mean. |

The numbers are probably the registrar's notes to say that there was a spelling mistake or error recording the names etc which the registrar corrected. I've got a death certificate for a woman called Susannah but her name is written "Susanah" and then the "n" was added as a correction. The number 4 is above the extra "n" and at the end of the certificate, after the name of the registrar is the note 4, initialled "R.B". The registrar was named Richard Blundell so I think he would have been adding a note to the record to say that he'd made an error. |
