I think you need to get Richard and Mary's m.cert. There's a dozen Richard's b in the 1920s with pob=Sunderland, so we need some help like his age and dad to narrow hings down.

I love it when you you reach the stage of saying How?
For Births deaths and marriages I use freebmd. Google it. It is free.
Experiment with different search criteria.
For census material I use Findmypast. I find the layout is clearer than Ancestry. Others use Ancestry happily. You can get a two week trial period.
For older records I use Familysearch.org
It is free.
For Geographic info Genuki is very good.
I google a lot and there are a nuber of other good sites with their own advantages.
