Who are they by names ??

AllanC

AllanC Report 6 Aug 2009 12:58

Was it just he and his siblings admitted to the workhouse - i.e. not either of his parents? If so, that would indicate they may have been orphans. Is it possible in that in such circumstances they could have been given a new surname by the authorities? (I've no evidence for such a practice but it seems the sort of thing well-meaning but misguided "guardians of the poor" might have done.)

Could this possibly be the parents in 1871?

This child could have been given the name Edward.

Hmmm, tricky. Do you know of this site - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ - it's got a lot of information about workhouses in general. Or if you google "milton union workhouse" there are hundreds of references. hope I'm not telling you something you know already.

Haven't checked censuses

AllanC

AllanC Report 6 Aug 2009 19:33

Possible scenario for Choccy:

Parents (married) named Munday
Father dies, mother remarries - to a Curtis
Mother then dies
Curtis leaves children at workhouse and clears off
In absence of any other name workhouse staff call them Curtis
BUT surely Ellen would be old enough to know her real surname?

Any other ideas?

And of course if the Mundays show up on other censuses that makes this one rather unlikely.

K Report 6 Aug 2009 19:34

I can't see a Munday family that ties in on the census, The Walter Daniel Munday birth does seem a good match in terms of first names, location and timing.

Susan, you say you know when & where Walter Daniel married, do you have the marriage cert ?, does it give any details of the father ?.
