Hi,
I have a family mystery to solve but I'm not sure the best way to go about it. My great-great-grandma Edith Onward Turner b. Jul/Aug/Sep 1877 in Lincoln, England was meant to have got her middle name from a sea faring vessel called "The Onward". The reason for this is that her older brothers George and Edward Turner were meant to have died on it or been lost at sea whilst working on the vessel. According to legend this vessel was a fishing vessel that sailed from the east coast possibly Grimsby, Hull or Whitby.
I don't know how to trace their death records or how to trace the vessel.
I have googled but have become bamboozled by various guides which all seem to contradict each other. Some saying the death records will be in with the GRO Index and others saying it will be in special indexes kept at Kew. As for tracing the vessel it seems like you need to know what type of vessel it was before you can search for it! I have googled "The Onward" and it came back to a report in the New York Times about a sunk/abandoned whaler in 1876. Although it gave no detail about the men who lost their lives or where it sailed from.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Edward would be very young to be at sea, if the family story is correct.

Gwyn and Sylvia - I'm lost for words!!!
Thank you so much for your help - I'd tried looking at the 1891 Census for Edith and family, when looking at a different branch but had no luck and kind of thought I'd come back to that one day.
I'm just very grateful for this information.
I feel like I'm a huge step forward towards finding out how much truth is in the legend. I've already found on other branches that legends have a grain of truth in them but only a grain!

I don't see George or Edward in later censuses, so perhaps some tragic accident did befall them.
I'm impressed. Most times these family stories are way off base.
