I only have a marriage cert for my husbands grandfather. Dated 1922

I have no place of birth or anything else.

Any ideas what I can do tried all normal things but seem to get nowhere

Just needing ideas if you have not got a place of birth to confirm correct person. It says father is deceased on marriage cert

Thanks

Is there no age or father's name on the marriage cert?

Porkie_Pie Report 4 Jul 2009 15:48

If he married in 1922 then with the info on the marriage cert (Fathers details) and his age, you should be able to locate him on the 1911 census

Yes the age of the Groom is 22. The father is named?

I know I sound a bit vague on this but to be honest I have posted so many times I am embarressed about asking again!

Thanks

Been looking for this gentleman for 6 years now.

I have checked the 1911 census but quite a common surname and to be honest it could be anyone on there as I cannot confirm the birthplace.

The name for everyone is Arthur Watson born 1900 and his father is Edward

PaulaW Report 4 Jul 2009 15:52

PS the area he was married in was Stratford London

There was an Arthur for that area on the 1911 census but no father in the house on the day the census was taken.

Who are the witnesses, is it possiable they are family members.

I only ask because I traced my great grandads family on the 1911 census by finding a family with the right name, right age for my great grandad, fathers name (and profession) matched the wedding certificate (but both the fathers and grooms name were common), so I was looking to narrow down the field, then I saw one of the witness names was also part of the same household. I know I am making assumptions but if I don't I will never be able to go further back, as it is I now think I have narrowed down the births of people with my great grandad's name to the right person, have to see what the cert says when it arrives.

The other thing is do you know if your husbands grandfather had any siblings, and if so it might be worth ordering their wedidng or birth certificates, espically if they have an unsual name. Using unusal sibling names is how I have traced some ancestors families on the census.

Do you know when he died? If so maybe his death certificate would hold some clues.

Who else is in the household, is their a mother? If so put the name into freebmd with Edward Watson, see what comes up in the right time frame, is their a viable marriage based on the number of years they state they were married (I've found even widows put down years married).

I wouls also trace your suspected ancestors back to the 1901 census (guess they were married before then if Arthur was born in 1900), does the father reappear?

PaulaW Report 4 Jul 2009 16:11

The only witness if S.G. Thelford. I can't even trace this name at all on anything.

The other witness was the father of the bride and it says x his mark.

Thanks for the idea about the freebmd will try that but will have to go back to the 1911 census first.

No I do not have a death cert for Arthur. The lady he married in 1922 he left when his two boys (my husbands father) were very young. No one knows where he went gossip by younger son says NZ but this is questionable.

Thanks

What about his address at the time of his marriage, who was living there in 1911?

Complete stab in the dark but I wonder if the witness Thelford should be Thetford? If so there is this birth entry....possibly a childhood friend or relative?

Births Dec 1899 (>99%)

Thetford Sidney George W.Ham 4a 370

Chrisa the 1901 census for Nofolk - does it say where Sidney was born as the birth is showing as West Ham.

Elaine - to be honest I haven't got a clue if this is the family or not. This is the probem I am having as I do not have a place of birth for Arthur or his father Edward.

Thanks for looking

Thank you everyone for your input on this.

The Sidney in the 1901 census - I believe is the wrong one as births on freebmd show West Ham.

As this person MAY have been a witness at the wedding even if I find him I am not absolutely sure what I can gain from it?

As regards my elusive Arthur. It is very kind of people to try and help BUT even if I had numerous posting on census for the 1901/1911 with Arthur father Edward I could not confirm this is the correct family.

The only clues I have as I said before is a marriage cert dated 1922 and an Electoral Roll look up for 1925 - still living at the same place as on marriage cert.

I am not sure if I have an options open now.

I would like to thank you all for your input.

Regards Paula
