Irene, thanks for your help, and i think you are right. As they were cotton weavers the chances are they had little or no education so could not write or even spell their surname. What a long way we have all come today! Linda |

Looks like her mother could not write so perhaps when she told the registrar her name at the time of her marriage that is when it got spelt wrong. Regards Irene |

I have a susan Jane HEATON as the mother on a my grandmothers b/c in 1894 in Manchester. I think I have found her marriage in 1892 to James MARSDEN. However, her witness is given as Elizabeth EATON (sister maybe?) and on a 1901 census i have her brother as John R EATON (and his wife Emma) living with her in Manchester. Can you tell me if it was common (maybe because of the strong accent for the H to occasionally be dropped on certain names? |
