Kate, thankyou for the info, that may seem the best route forward (Upholland), it seems the closest match! I think I had seen that somewhere but disregarded it for some reason I now can't recall! Thank you all again who have helped in this, it is appreciated |

Please remember that ages on the 1841 Census are all out by several years sometimes. You're better off working from an 1851 Census age, if you're lucky enough to have one. |

On the Lancs online parish clerk site is this (I have rewritten it as against copying and pasting to see if I can make any sense of it): |

thanking people for all their offers of info, but going back to my original query, how do you firmly establish familial links pre - census? Does it all come down to a bit of detective work and "best guess" fits? |

Thank you all, yes it is the James that married Ellen, everything from 1837 onwards I have, I just cannot reconcile the fact that his age given on the 1841 census puts his birth date between 1811-1816, and his birth place given as Upholland on suceeding census, but cannot find a James, born to a Richard in that time.... oops, almost forgot, he is NOT the James in Ormskirk, he lived in and around Shevington till his death (possibly 1868) |

Luckily my ancestor James Gaskell married in 1837 so i have his certificate. It gives his fathers name as Richard. Therefore James was living with his own wife and family in the 1841 census, not his parents. I have an area of birth for James but cannot seem to find him in OPC records for the right date (Between 1811-1816, working on age given in 1841 census), with a Richard as father. I am seemingly unable to establish a direct connection.... Any tips or advice???? |
