I am doing my husbands tree. The family name is Fuller. There has always been a story in the family that the name used to be Hope Fuller but the Hope got Dropped when My Father in law John Patrick fuller was Born in 1919
It turns out that his father John Ensor Hope Fuller never married his mother Honora Touhy but they did have 3 children together, John Being the youngest.
John Ensor did how ever go on to marry Honora's younger Sister Ellen in 1927 she was 30 years his junior, she had 2 children with him. This left a very bitter taste in Honora's and her childrens mouth. (so little was ever know about them) I have marriage and birth certificates for this family
looking for a birth for John Ensor proved very difficulty. I at last found one, he was born John Ensor Hope 1855 Brighton father John Hope mother Sarah Hope Formally Baker.
I then found a late christening for John Ensor hope Fuller in 1858 Mother Sarah hope, Father Henry Fuller. I found a marriage for both Sarah and Henry in the same year. Both christening and marriage took place in Brighton.
I then found a christening for Sarah Ellen Hope, Mayfield Brighton 10 th April 1836. Her mother was Sarah Hope her Father was Edward Hope. They married 17th Nov 1821 Mayfield sussex.she was Sarah Baker when she married. I have them on the census with a brother John born 1821
I have Sarah and Henry Fuller on the 1861 Census with John born 1855 aged 6 living sussex but he is not with them after that date.
What I am confused with is the name on John Ensor birth certificated in 1855 If Sarah Ellen hope born 1836 is John Ensor's mother then why did she put Sarah Hope formally Baker on as mother. She would not have ever been Baker as she was born 15 years after her parents marriage, and why did she leave out the Ellen it is her marriage and death certifacate.
Could John Ensor have been her mothers child and she brought him up as she was getting married to Henry Fuller that same year. ? If it was, then why dose it say John Hope as father and not Edward ?
Has any one had this before, your thoughts would be valued.
P S sorry for any spelling mistakes not my best subject.
Regards Diane

Could she have just got confused when she went to register the birth?
If the register said "Name of mother?" she may have interpreted that as the name of HER mother and not herself ... ??
Jill
p.s. Have you checked out Sussexweald site for any of these - it covers Mayfield.

I think what Jill says makes sense, she gave her mother's maiden name instead of baby's mother's maiden name.

Thanks all She siad her name was Sarah hope formally Baker She may have been confussed and added her own mothers madien name but I have had no other like this. No way of being sure of this.
I am also very surprised that Sarah and Edward who married in 1821 went 10 years before haveing a child John Edgar born 1831 then Sarah Ellen born 1836.
