Is there some kind person that can do a search that I have found on A ...... y please. James Mahoney 1854 born St Giles Middlesex. There are 2 listed but its H/H schedule 78 that I am interested in as there are 3 known children that I have found listed individually. Father is Michael Mahoney but as there are a few Michael's listed thought it better to try this way.
Many many thanks Rose

Thanks Shirley, When I found the family on 1881 census it only gave father as M and wife Ann, they were living 26 Little Wild Street, St Giles. So mother Hannah shortened her name! I have been looking for a marriage of Michael and Ann, will have to go back to Freebmd see if I can now find marriage of Michael and Hannah?
In 1881 the family looked as though they were all living at home,26 Little Wild Street,St Giles. I have Hannah born 1857 which could be Honorah. There was not a Michael aged 1 but he could have died as there was a Michael born 1870. Have Johanna, James and Ellen all on 1881 census so surely it must be the same family?
They were in the workhouse!! Although Michael had work did that mean that he did not earn enough to keep his family, or could there have been another explanation. I do not know much about the workhouses.
Sorry it has taken me a time to get back to you but I had a visitor and they have only just left.
Many many thanks Rose

Cannot see a marriage of Michael and Hannah 1845-1860, maybe they married in Ireland?
I cannot see an 1851 census of Michael Mahoney and spouse Hannah/Ann so I am back to square one!
Many thanks Rose

Hi, It might be this one St Giles June 1854 Michael Mahony--Honora Macknery 1b/549 Cheers Eileen
|
Hi Eileen,
Macknery sounds more Irish than the others I have seen on Freebmd and it is possible as their first child was born Sept qtr 1854.
Do you know if Honorah is another name for Hannah, or the Irish way of spelling? as she is listed 1861 as Hannah and 1881 as Ann,,Its quite confusing! It will not tell me on the marriage certificate where they were born only the address where they are residing.
Many many thanks, its certainly a good possible. Rose

this could be Michael in 1851
1851 England Census Name: Michael Mahoney Age: 24 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Civil parish: St Giles in The Fields County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Street address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:
Disability: View Image Registration district: St Giles Sub-registration district: St Giles South ED, institution, or vessel: 5b Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 528 Household Members: Name Age John Duggins 40 Mary Duggins 31 Abigail Duggins 14 John Duggins 8 Willm Duggins 1 Jeremiah Mahoney 36 **********************Michael Mahoney 24
Jeremiah is actually 30, not 36 - could be a brother?

Hi Erin, Thank you for pointing out Michael Mahoney was not in the workhouse. I thought if I tried one of their children it might be an easier approach to get further back, which has proved ok so far.
I am trying to track Michael and his wife, as you will see from the thread she was Hannah in 1861 but Ann in 1881! I would like to find their marriage but could not see anything on Freebmd and I am struggling on Ancestry as I do not have subs. Yes there are several Mahoneys and it is not clear which family I should trace. Michaels wife was born in Limerick abt 1827 but it is possible that they married in Ireland before coming here.
I did not think Honarah was another spelling for Hannah although one of their children who is Hannah n 1881 is spelt Hanorah in 1861 so it must be down to bad handwriting from the enumerator?
Thank you Choccy for finding Michael in 1851 St Giles area, that may be a possible.
Any help in finding them would be very much appreciated.
Rose
